Traffic and Safety

March 13, 2020

Local citizens, including GEHCA officers, communicated with Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) about the safety improvement of the intersection of Sangamore Road and Walhonding Road.  Mr. Vincent Ho, P.E., Area Engineer, Traffic Engineering Studies Section, Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, has worked on the project.  He wrote, “The traffic signal is presently in design and should be constructed within the next 12 months. When completed, the traffic signal will be equipped with accessible pedestrian signals and countdown pedestrian signals (APS/CPS) to provide direction for pedestrians to cross the intersection when it is safe to do so.  Additionally, the traffic signal will provide marked crosswalks at the north and west legs of the intersection where there currently sidewalk and ramp conveyance exist.  In the interim, we will install “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” signs underneath the existing stop signs at the Walhonding Road approaches to explicitly warn motorists that traffic along Sangamore Road has the right-of-way and should not be expected to stop. Work Order (S-020067) has been prepared for the installation of these signs. We anticipate that this work will be completed by April 17, 2020, if not sooner, weather and schedule permitting."
